"Losartan and Alzheimer's"

Losartan

 ---

LOSARTAN a common and inexpensive Blood Pressure Medication may cut risk of Alzheimer’s by one half – 50% -finally something at appears to have promise...(Brand names are Cozaar and Hyzaar.)

There is and has been an endless amount of daily drivel broadcast in the news media directed at the public in general and specifically towards the Alzheimer’s victims and caregivers…It is most always just so much malarkey…almost daily one hears of diets, food supplements, drugs or of life style changes that will keep Alzheimer’s from knocking at your door…in the words of that great   detective of English liiterature, Sherlock Holmes, it  is the same “ineffable twaddle” and “unmitigated bleat” that I have heard since the day June was first diagnosed in January of 1998…eventually I found that ALL of these claims of keeping Alzheimer’s at bay were just one of the many hoaxes perpetrated on the public and the victims of this terrible disease…Finally near the end of 2010, the NIH in the US designated a Jury of 15 Medical Specialists to examine all such claims and studies to determine their validity…Their conclusion was that there was not even a moderate amount of scientific evidence to support any such claims and that NOTHING would slow down, prevent or cure Alzheimer’s…but unfortunately the empty claims have continued unabated…

Perhaps LOSARTAN will be the bright spot in a sea of nonsense…

The UK’s Daily EXPRESS on May 6th 2013 ran a story that reported on the research done by the University of Bristol.

“Research has found that “People on Losartan for high blood pressure also appeared to be significantly protected against dementia (Alzheimer’s) – in fact, it is thought to slash the risk by as much as 50 percent.”

The early results are so encouraging that the University is said to be launching a “ground breaking four year 2 million (English pounds) UK trial”…this is said to be a full blown clinical trial to determine the true effectiveness…”The Losartan clinical trial will be hosted by North Bristol NHS Trust and led by academics from Bristol, Cambridge and Queen’s Belfast Universities.”

Losartan is one of the blood pressure mediations that I am personally taking to control my own blood pressure…It has been a very effective blood pressure medication for me…I am certainly going to recommend it to my family and friends who have such a need both for it’s effectiveness on Blood pressure problems and also because it holds some promise as a prevention for Alzheimer’s…

Editorial Note: I referenced a quote from Sherlock Holmes above...it may be of interest to some, that in 1999, June and I visited London for the 8th time...this was a last "Goodbye" visit for June and I to our favorite city London and our friends the Bruce's at nearby Bexley, Kent...We were able to schedule our visit to coincide with the first ever Sherlock Holmes Festival. it was during this "Sherlock Holmes Festival" that a dedication of a statute of Holmes in front of the Baker Street underground Station took place. June who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's just one year earlier was doing very well...this trip was one of our "Bucket List" items that we were doing to make June's life as full as possible before Alzheimer's took over her life...we had a grand time that also included a reception at the House of Lords on a open air deck fronting on the Thames...also a reception on the famous Tower Bridge's high walkways that was hosted by the chief magistrate from "Old Bailey" ...we also stayed at the Sherlock Holmes Hotel on Baker street.

 Reader's Comments

Peter Smith  - Rothwell, Wakefield, United Kingdom - (18 June 2013): "I totally agree, everyday there is a report about "a new cure",or this diet, exercise, healthy living etc., will help, prevent or stop dementia. Not only  is it  a load of twaddle, it gives people false hope. I had a client who saw a report that curry was a "cure" for dementia. He decided to eat only curry for breakfast, lunch, tea, supper, with devastating effect. The only report that should be published regarding a cure, or prevention should be when one is actually proved and verified."

Chris Law  - Detroit, Michigan - (18 June 2013): "Thanks, my dad takes this. He is in the early stages of Alzheimer`s though. He has been taking Losartan for about a year now.

Linda Casey-Overholt  - Coshocton, Ohio - (18 June 2013): "Interesting stan!!"
